‘Beyond the Stage’ builds on a pilot project called ‘Set The Stage’ which ran in 2022 – Now with the support of the Young Start National Lottery Community Fund, DD8 are developing ‘Beyond the Stage’ into a recurring curriculum of personal development created via the input, feedback and ideas of both the young people involved in the pilot, and from the wider group of young people who participate in services at DD8 Music.
Beyond the Stage aims to work on building young people’s confidence, health & well-being, teamwork, planning and organising, presentation skills, musical ability, problem solving, employability skills, multi-tasking, creativity, communication skills, kinesthetic learning, awareness, leadership, social skills, building strong and positive relationships.
The learning process in Beyond the Stage is a responsive one, focussing on volunteering and employability. Participants highlight areas that they feel they need to focus on – allowing a flexible approach to learning. It will be the young people themselves who will shape activity – harnessing the expertise of the staff provided to them to enable them to reach their individual goals.
Beyond the Stage will run separate groups for Under 16s and Over 16s. Regular sessions will take place at our DD8 Music Studio space in Kirriemuir, but the project will also be available in other Angus towns, beginning with Forfar for the first intake.

The DJ Discovery 8 is a four-week programme where young people learn the skills to create mixes using high-tech equipment. Participants learn the fundamentals of DJing from the basics of rhythm and timing; to using filters, effects, scratching and looping. Effectively structuring a mix teaches young people to create and follow a plan, improve their timekeeping skills and problem solving; whilst thinking critically and creatively to enhance skills and technical repertoire. The programme gives young people a core knowledge of the musical theory such as key changes, waveforms, and BPM and the ability to implement this into their mixes. Sessions are a combination of theory and practical lessons; the theory aspect of the sessions include presentations, games, and group work. DJ Discovery 8 was fully funded by Angus Council’s Power of Youth fund until April 2023. Watch out for future developments.
